Building Compliance Officer/Kaiarahi Tautukunga Hanga Whare
We’ve got an exciting opportunity for you to join our small team delivering excellent building compliance services in Porirua. This is a role where your compliance mindset and sound judgement will make a real difference to the community.
About the role
As a key member of the team, you’ll deliver building compliance services across a broad range of functions. You’ll play an important part in helping ensure buildings meet regulatory requirements and are safe for public use.
In this role, you will:
- Undertake onsite building compliance audits, including checks of building warrants of fitness (BWoF), specified systems, and means of escape from fire
- Prepare clear and accurate building compliance audit reports for building owners and industry professionals
- Carry out compliance schedule and BWoF tasks, including checking received BWoFs, and writing and issuing compliance schedules
- Process certificates of public use applications and undertake inspections to support decision-making
- Apply appropriate education, compliance and enforcement tools to resolve building non-compliance issues and complaints
- Support pool barrier audits and process relevant certificate of acceptance applications
- Support specified systems assessments for consenting applications
- Carry out cost recovery for audits and BWoF returns
What you’ll bring
You’ll be a practical and confident compliance professional who can demonstrate:
- Experience in compliance, investigation, enforcement, or building regulatory work
- Ability to interpret legislation, exercise sound judgement, and make clear decisions
- Knowledge of building compliance, including building warrants of fitness and compliance schedules
- Strong understanding of the Building Act 2004 and wider regulatory environment
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work constructively with a range of stakeholders, including building owners, tenants, and industry professionals
- Strong documentation, record-keeping, and time management skills
- Commitment to ongoing learning and development
- Current unrestricted New Zealand driver’s licence
