About the role
As a Lifeguard at Recreation Porirua, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring our aquatic facilities are safe, welcoming and well maintained. You’ll provide professional supervision of patrons, respond confidently to emergencies, and deliver friendly, high-quality customer service every day.
You’ll work across Council aquatic facilities within Porirua, reporting to the Pool Supervisor and working closely with a supportive, community-focused team.
What you’ll be doing
- Actively supervising pool users and facilities to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies
- Providing calm, professional and friendly customer service
- Enforcing pool rules and regulations to ensure everyone’s safety
- Administering first aid and emergency procedures when required
- Conducting water testing to operational standards
- Maintaining high standards of cleanliness across facilities
- Following rosters, being punctual and reliable
- Building positive relationships with customers, community groups and colleagues
- Supporting Council emergency and civil defence responses when required
Porirua City is a living wage accredited employer and the starting hourly rate for this is from $29.00.
About you

You’ll bring:
- Proven customer service experience and strong communication skills
- A calm, professional approach to managing conflict or challenging situations
- Good judgement, initiative and problem-solving skills
- The ability to swim competently and maintain a required level of swimming fitness
- Flexibility to work rostered hours
- A strong commitment to health and safety
- The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- The ability to meet the physical demands of the role
You must also be able to:
- pass Police Vetting under the Children’s Act 2014, and a pre-employment drug test.
- obtain and maintain the National Lifeguard Award (Pools) (you must be 16 years or older)
- pass a swimming competency test
