Senior Advisor Health & Safety - Kaitohutohu Matua Hauora me te Haumarutanga

We’re looking for a proactive and passionate Senior Health & Safety Advisor to join our People and Capability team — someone who thrives on making a real difference to people’s wellbeing and workplace culture.

Working for Porirua City is an opportunity for you to make a real difference in the community. You’ll be welcomed into a team that’s collaborative, values input and empowers you to make things happen. To top it off, the harbour, beaches, bike trails and walks will be at your doorstep.

About the role

This is your opportunity to play a leading role in embedding a positive, practical safety culture across the organisation. You’ll be the go-to expert — a trusted partner to managers and staff alike — helping create systems, tools, and ways of working that keep everyone safe and support continuous improvement.

You will:

  • Lead improvements to our health and safety systems, policies, and processes, ensuring compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act 2015.
  • Provide expert advice and coaching to managers and staff, influencing great safety behaviours at every level.
  • Drive innovative approaches to identifying, assessing, and managing risks.
  • Coordinate audits, investigations, and reporting that keep us on the right track.
  • Deliver engaging training, workshops, and initiatives that build safety skills and confidence across the organisation.
  • Be a visible, hands-on presence — visiting sites regularly and connecting with teams and contractors to reinforce safe practices.

Every day is different, but your work will always centre on one thing: keeping our people safe and building a stronger, more resilient organisation.

What you’ll bring to the role:

To succeed in this role, you’ll have:

  • 5+ years’ experience in Health & Safety.
  • Tertiary qualifications relevant to H&S.
  • Strong working knowledge of NZ H&S legislation and practical experience applying it in varied environments.
  • Excellent problem-solving, relationship-building, and communication skills.
  • A proactive and collaborative approach — you enjoy partnering with others to get great results.
  • Confidence working with H&S systems and data, with an eye for continuous improvement.
  • A current NZ unrestricted driver’s licence.

Most importantly, you’ll bring curiosity, resilience, and a genuine care for people and their wellbeing.

What you need to do now

You’ll be part of a supportive, values-driven team that believes safety is everyone’s business. We celebrate diversity, encourage innovation, and back our people to grow and lead.

Here, your expertise will be valued, your voice heard, and your work truly impactful.
